2016 Youth Soloist Competition Winner - Liya Jin

The Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra Education Department is honored to announce that violinist, Liya Jin, has been named the 2016 Youth Soloist Competition Winner! Liya, an 11th grader at Portage Central High School, will perform her winning piece, Sarasate’s Introduction and Tarantella, Op. 43, with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra at Chenery Auditorium during our Family Discovery Concert on Dec 18th at 3pm. Liya has a long history with the KSO, including the start of her violin study after being introduced to the instrument a KSO Family Discovery concert at the age of four! She has been a member of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra since 6th grade and currently serves as it’s co-concertmaster. In 2013, Liya won the KSO Youth Soloist Competition and was named a winner of the 2015 BRAVO! Competition on the piano. Liya currently studies violin with WMU professor, Renata Artman Knific and volunteers with KSO’s Kalamazoo Kids in Tune program at Woods Lake Elementary. We had a wide array of talent that auditioned this year and also recognized the following student musicians: 2nd Place - Ben McWilliams (Tuba – Gull Lake High School), Honorable Mention – Alex Smith (Voice – Loy Norrix High School) and Sava Velkoff (Viola – Loy Norrix High School). Be sure to join us on December 18th to celebrate this young phenomenal musician!
