Patriotic Pops - Bronson Park

July 2, 2022 | 7:30 p.m. | Free Admission

KSO joins Concerts in the Park once more on Saturday, July 2 for a reprise of its new annual tradition, Patriotic Pops, presented by the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo through the Summertime Live series. This performance will feature favorite tunes from the marches of John Philip Sousa to Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s roaring 1812 Overture. The full symphony will be joined by the Legends Drum and Bugle Corps.

Gershwin & Dvorak's New World - Gilmore Car Museum

Grab a blanket and join us under the stars for a night of symphonic music as the KSO returns to the Gilmore Car Museum to provide the soundtrack to your summer! The KSO’s performance at the Gilmore Car Museum includes George Gershwin’s lively An American in Paris and soprano Rhea Olivaccé (faculty at Western Michigan University) performing Gershwin tunes like “I Got Rhythm.”

Musical Storybooks: Octopus’s Garden - Huss Project Farmer's Market

One of the KSO’s most popular education programs, Musical Storybooks, takes audiences deeper into family-friendly books while musicians of the KSO paint a musical soundscape. Musical Storybooks bring stories to life by immersing them in music. These programs are a fantastic way to engage children of all ages in literacy, storytelling, and music-making.

Octopus’s Garden by Ringo Star

This is a new program is performed by a String Quartet (2 violins, viola, cello). We use the book Octopus’s Garden written by Ringo Star, and weave Beatles tunes throughout the story. Opportunities for audience participation and singing. Songs include: Yellow Submarine, With a Little Help from My Friends, Let It Be, When I’m 64, Hey Jude, All You Need Is Love, and Octopus’s Garden.

This performance is in partnership with St. Joseph County ISD and Three Rivers Library and occur between 10-11 a.m. Admission is free, and tickets are not required.

Musical Storybooks bring stories to life by immersing them in music. These programs are a fantastic way to engage children of all ages in literacy, storytelling, and music-making.

Because by Mo Willems

This program is good for older and younger children and is performed by a string quartet. The story, by Mo Willems, is about a girl who heard a symphony orchestra and was inspired to become a composer herself! Built into the program is a lesson on conducting.

One of the KSO’s most popular education programs, Musical Storybooks, takes audiences deeper into family-friendly books while musicians of the KSO paint a musical soundscape. Musical Storybooks bring stories to life by immersing them in music. These programs are a fantastic way to engage children of all ages in literacy, storytelling, and music-making.

Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev

This program is a symphonic fairy tale written by Sergei Prokofiev and uses a Woodwind Quintet (oboe, clarinet, French horn, bassoon, and flute). Each character in the story has a musical theme that utilizes each instrument in a unique way. There is something for everyone in this program! We do have craft activities available that will appeal to younger audiences.

Musical Storybooks bring stories to life by immersing them in music. These programs are a fantastic way to engage children of all ages in literacy, storytelling, and music-making.

Hum and Swish by Matt Myers

This program is best for younger children and families, and tells the story of a young person who just wants to make something at the beach! She is continuously interrupted by strangers, friends and family and is challenged to express how she feels about these interruptions. This show includes a short SEL lesson and an opportunity to think about how different music makes you feel.
