About Instrument Petting Zoos

Explore musical instruments with an interactive, hands-on experience. Trained docents will bring instruments, activities, and recordings. With the help of the music teacher and four school volunteers, KSO docents play brief recorded examples, then assist students with playing instruments.

Grade Levels: 3-5

Fee: None! This program is free to schools within 20 miles of Kalamazoo! (See below for arrangements for distant schools.)

Scheduling: 30-minute or 40-minute sessions (maximum of 4 sessions) with approximately 25 students per session (30 students max).

The school agrees to provide:

  • Music teacher to help present the Zoo
  • NEW THIS YEAR: 4 school volunteers to assist docents
  • A room set up with 5 tables
  • Access to room 30 minutes prior to zoo for setup

Distant schools: Schools more than 20 miles from Kalamazoo need to provide 14-16 volunteers, and a $50 fee is required to cover transportation costs. High school band students make great volunteers and also benefit from the mentoring opportunity!
