Newcomer's Guide

First time at the KSO!? We've compiled a list of FAQ so you can simply relax and enjoy the show.

How much does a ticket cost?

If you are interested in three or more concerts during our season, contact the KSO Box Office at 269.349.7759. You’re eligible to become a subscriber and save! Only one or two shows you’re interested in? Great! Our single ticket pricing for our Symphonic and Zhang Financial Pops! Series ranges from $24-$60. However, we have KSO@The Movies!, Family Discovery, Classics Uncorked and On Tap and Special Events as well. For more information on pricing you can contact our office and we can send you a brochure with everything you’ll need to know. You can also view concert information here!

What to Expect at a KSO eventWhat do I wear to the concert?

We want you to be comfortable! We find that most people dress casually for our concerts. The only people you’ll see in a tuxedo will be the musicians onstage! But feel free to get as dressed up as you like!

How long is a concert?

Depending on the programming, it can be anywhere from 90-120 minutes. If you want to know the time a specific concert will end feel free to call our office at 269.349.7759.

I know nothing about symphonic music, will I be bored?

We sure hope not! We recommend attending our Wiser Financial Prelude prior to the concert, from 7-7:30 p.m. Our conductor will help guide you through interesting details of the evening’s program and might even introduce the soloist. New in the fall of 2018: Immediately after each Symphonic Series concert, remain in the auditorium for "AfterWORDS," an interactive discussion between the conductor, soloist, and audience.

Can I take pictures during the performance?

We love it when you check in on Facebook and tag us in photos from the lobby and encore receptions, but we ask that once the concert starts your phone is turned off.

I’m a student, do I get a discount?

Students get 50% off regular KSO concerts, if you purchase in advance, for our Symphonic, Zhang Financial Pops!, Classics Uncorked, and Classics On Tap Series (students must be 21 or older to attend Classics Uncorked and On Tap). Students are also eligible for $5 student rush tickets the night of a KSO Symphonic or Zhang Financial Pops! Series concert, with a valid student ID.

Does my child need a ticket?

Every person needs a ticket even if your child plans to sit on your lap. We need to know the exact number of people in our concert hall so as not to exceed capacity.

How old does my child have to be to attend a concert?

The Symphonic Series includes musical works lasting from 10 minutes to over one hour, and the concerts are up to two hours long. For this reason, we provide excellent programming for young children and encourage only the "mature-beyond-their-years, musically-oriented" pre-teens to attend the Symphonic Series.

When should I applaud?

Most people applaud a performer to express their awe and appreciation. So, whenever so moved, please applaud. However, it may help you to know that most symphony-goers feel bound to an unwritten rule of applauding only at the end of the entire musical work. For example, in a four-movement work, people actually wait until the end of the fourth movement to applaud, rather than between each movement. But, they generally make up for lost applause by applauding for a really long time. How long? Long enough for the conductor to bow, shake hands with some musicians, walk off the stage, pause, come back on the stage, invite the orchestra to stand, bow, shake hands with some more musicians, and walk off again. If you're unsure, follow the lead of those around you.

When should I arrive?

We recommend arriving early so you can grab a drink and get settled before the concert starts. Once the music starts, the ushers will not allow you to enter until the first break. If you arrive after the break, then you may be sitting in the lobby until intermission. This is a pretty common practice among orchestras all over the world, to ensure the enjoyment of the majority of concert-goers who arrive and take their seat on time. We know you'll understand.
