The Story of the Search

After 18 years under the leadership of Maestro Raymond Harvey, the KSO embarks on a search for the next Music Director. This person will lead the orchestra as we continue to follow the path laid out in our most recent strategic plan and celebrate 100 years of music making for our community.

The Music Director Search committee was convened, immediately following Harvey’s announcement of his departure, with a participation of thirteen members; musicians, Board, staff, and a local consultant. After a thorough internal review of candidates (over 300 were identified), the committee selected five exceptional finalists. Prior to the season opening and throughout the year, a smaller review committee made up of a musician, Board member, and Daniel Brier, Interim Music Director/Resident Conductor, will visit each of the finalists at their current placement to observe and meet with colleagues to get a fuller sense of them as conductors and leaders in their organizations. These five finalists join us this season, each spending a week in Kalamazoo to work with musicians, conduct a Symphonic Series concert, gather with the Board, and meet with KSO Ambassadors, KSO League, sponsors, donors, and patrons.

You, our patrons and friends, will have an opportunity to express your opinion about each of the candidates. Those who attend the concerts will receive an online survey following the performance. This feedback will be considered along with the feedback provided by the search committee and Board members.

KSO will select and appoint its new Music Director no later than the end of June 2018. During the 2018-2019 concert season, the successful candidate will be acting as Music Director Designate, with the 2019-2020 concert season as the first season as the fully appointed Music Director. These are exciting times for the KSO and we invite you to join us in welcoming these fine candidates to the podium throughout our 97th season. KSO is embracing change and looking forward to our future.
