Developing Advanced Music Skills

For Older Students

Young Composers in Concert

Budding young composers can submit original compositions for consideration. All entries receive comments from a panel of composer-adjudicators and two are chosen to be orchestrated and premiered at our Youth Concerts. (more info)

Youth Soloists in Concert

Advanced student performers audition for the opportunity to perform as soloists with the KSO during our Youth Concerts. Each of three winners performs two or more concerts with the orchestra, providing an opportunity for reflection and polishing in this formative experience.

Scholarships for Private Lessons

Students in financial need receive private lessons with the help of KSO and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League support.

Ensemble Coaches - Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Ensembles and Schools

KSO musicians mentor aspiring young performers, sharing their expertise and experience during ensemble coachings and sectional rehearsals.

Lessons with KSO's Artists in Residence at Crescendo Academy of Music

KSO partners with Crescendo Academy of Music to offer intermediate and advanced-level private study with KSO Artists in Residence on clarinet, oboe, horn, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. VisitCrescendoAcademy.com or call (269) 345-6664 for availability and scheduling.

Student Performers Showcase

Area schools are invited to showcase their instrumental programs for KSO audiences. Small ensembles perform in the lobby as patrons arrive for a concert. Students receive complimentary tickets to attend the evening's concert.

Bravo

Advanced student performers are selected by audition to perform in a recital recorded for broadcast on WMUK public radio. Bravo is a joint effort of WMUK, local arts organizations (including the KSO), and area music teachers.

Side by Side Performances

Professional KSO musicians perform side-by-side with Kalamazoo Junior Symphony members and area band and choir students in collaborative performances. Side-by-Sides are a standard feature of KSO Rural Community Tours and occasional Pops concerts.
