  • October's Musician Feature: Mike Brozick, Trumpet
October's Musician Feature: Mike Brozick, Trumpet

One of my most memorable concerts with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra was performing Richard Strauss’ “Ein Heldenleben” which translates to “A Hero’s Life.” I've always loved how orchestral music can take you on a journey, similar to the emotional arc of a great film, and Strauss’ music has that same cinematic quality. Strauss said the “hero” in “A Hero’s Life” was Strauss himself, but I like to think it is the trumpet. I was drawn to the heroic qualities of the trumpet at an early age when my instrument made its appearance on the soundtrack alongside of movie heroes like Indiana Jones. Not long after I started playing the trumpet, I got excited about orchestra music from the great film scores, like Raiders of the Lost Ark but soon discovered my other heroes of Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss and Mahler.

One hour before the start of Symphonic Series concerts, join Maestro Harvey as he gives a sneak preview of the evening’s themes from the piano. Sit wherever you like in the hall and gain an insider view on the performance that makes the concert itself even more fun and interesting. Concluding at about 7:30, you will have plenty of time to enjoy a drink in the lobby, hear the Student Performer Showcase, and find your seats again before the show.

Music. Education. Community.

2015 brought about many changes for the KSO and our patrons, including a new look and feel, a new responsive website design, the implementation of Tessitura as our new interactive database and some very exciting and unique programming changes.  Alliances with Disney for the national premiere of Disney in Concert - Alice in Wonderland and a world premiere perfornamce featuring Who's Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band, were just two examples of this season's programming achievements.

In education the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra saw tremendous growth among their Kalamazoo Kids In Tune (KKIT) program, which is in partnership with Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Public Schools, and the Marvelous Music! program, as well as an increase in demand for in classroom visits with our KSO Artists in Residence.  The annual KSO Youth Concerts proudly served more than 13,000 students in 100 Southwest Michigan schools this past spring.

Symphonic music and music education opportunities have also extended into the community through the KSO's Family Fun Chamber Series and our community concerts. You will find KSO ensembles performing at many of your favorite events and venue's.  Stay up to date with the community events listings on our site as we add performances often.

We hope you will take a few moments to explore our site and learn more about our history, education programs, concert series, our KSO Music Director, and, of course, our talented musicians. We’re committed to ensuring symphonic music is part of everyday life in our community through outstanding musical listening and learning experiences. We look forward to seeing you in the concert hall!
